When I received the commission for a "White Rose on a White background, with imperceptible transition between them" I did not quite understand what that really meant. The piece was stuck for a while until I heard that the patron was anxious to receive it soon, as he was terminally ill and this was his gift to his wife. Then I understood, he had commissioned his own Requiem Still Life!
It was quickly finished, but alas by the time it reached London he had passed.
His wife wrote wondering why I had painted a Flower of Death. I explained that her
husband's commission was just that, a beautiful Requiem Rose.
